PTE ESSAYS LIST

1.Do you think the consumer should avoid over packed products or it is a responsibility of product producers to avoid extra packaging of products.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Answer 1:

Over-packaging of products has become a trend in today's competitive world. Producers are trying to attract consumers with an attractive packaging of their products, not bothered about its negative impact not only on our environment but the users as well. It should be the responsibility of the producers to limit the wastage of the resources in the form of unnecessary packaging.
The cost of over packaging is actually added to the product sold. In fact, at times it is seen the packing cost and durability is more that the product itself. The type of packaging found in pharmaceutical industries can be taken as an example here. Pills and tablets are found to be packed in much bigger and colorful strips than needed. Does this increase the sale of medicine? No. Such packaging is of no concern to the consumers. But, the cost of medicine would have definitely been lesser if sold in a simple outlook.
Further, the material used is mostly non-disposable which adds to the environmental pollution to a great extent. Snacks and other food items packaged in eye-catchy shimmering colored packets are consumed on a large scale by everybody. These packets are really difficult to dispose as they emit poisonous gas if burnt and if not can be seen to contaminate water somewhere. Producers should realize the importance of using materials like paper and stick to simple packaging.

Packaging as seen increases the cost of the product and also makes our environment unhealthy. So, this packaging boom should be checked on a serious note by the producers. Moreover, the producers should be restricted with predefined rules and parameters set by the government. It is also recommended that an awareness among the users that quality of the product is important rather than the attractive packaging.

Answer 2:

This is a true fact to consider that over packaging has become a trend of modern competitive market. Considering this, there are some analysts who hold an opinion that consumers should avoid over packed products while others consider consumers should not avoid over packed products. This essay will give assertion on both sides of the contention before deducing reasonable conclusion.
There are reasonable arguments in favour of over packaging from manufacturer. They try to make products as lucrative looking as possible. Consumers have number of alternative options in the market but some of them concern style or looks of packaging while deciding to buy a product. Attractive packaging could be significant factor for selling more.  It is generally seen that product producers try to attract their customers in many ways by over packaging. For example, in case of some biscuit packs we can see that the biscuits are placed in the small plastic tray and covered with multiple layers of packets. In terms of keeping these sorts of products intact and fresh, it is sometimes necessary to use over packing. In these cases the manufacturer would show reasons that they are over packing products for the sake of customers’ benefit. From this regards, it seems logical that the customer should make informed decision whether or not to buy products that use over packing.

In spite of views discussed above regarding of over packaging, there are some groups who are in favour of avoiding over packed products and say that the manufacturers are deceiving customers by over packing their products. Cost of packaging and their detrimental effects to our environment could be substantial reasons behind of the opponents’ viewpoint.  All the packaging costs are directly being added to the consumers and they have to spend more than the value of products. Small amount of real products are often presented in a large container and packet and the customers are being deceived by the packet sized. Moreover, the manufacturers often use non-disposable wrappers and packets which add bad effects to the environmental.
In the end, undoubtedly, extra packaging of products has detrimental effect to the society; however, as far as I am concern consumers should avoid over packaging products to solve the negative effects it possessed to them and to the environment. If customers start avoiding such unnecessary over packing of products, manufacturers would be bound to change the way they are doing the packing nowadays.

Opinion - consumer should avoid over packed products or it is responsibility of producer to avoid extra packaging of products

 2. Do you think a consumer should avoid over packed products or it is a responsibility of the producer to avoid extra packaging of products?" Give your views or any relevant example with your own experience

These days companies are selling their products by extra packing to attract the buyers.
However, I am unconvinced and feel that the consumers should avoid purchasing such products as it is a waste of money and resources.

Firstly, over packing of the goods increases its maximum retail price.Hence, although the company is spending on the packing,it is the  consumer who ls at loss as the company sells the product at a higher price than needed and recovers the money spent on its packing. It is the consumers who should realise this and avoid buying such items.

Secondly, people these days buy food products that can be consumed on the run. The plastic and paper that is used to wrap these goods are then thrown around the place resulting in environmental pollution.

On the other hand, fast food franchisee use various attractive ways to pack their products which then lure the kids in buying them.Children form the major proportion of the consumers of these unhealthy foods. As a result of the consumption of these processed foods there is a rise in the number of children suffering from obesity, diabetes etc.

To conclude, I believe it is the responsibility of the consumers to refuse products that are overpacked as ultimately they are on the losing side.

3. Age Discrimination is important factor in work culture?

Answer 1:-

Discrimination against older workers is one of the most dangerous problems facing lesser developed nations today. However, the issue is being tackled by various agencies to provide equal rights to the employees. I would like to accord with the given notion.

To begin with, every human being has the right to live equally in this egalitarian society without any fear most importantly older workers in the workplace. Elderly workers should be given more respect and dignity because of their age and working experience. If this is done on a workplace, the productivity will be surged up and the company may gain more profit. For instance, there is a less chance of making an error by older workers than younger because the older comprehend the protocol well and act being very careful with due consideration.

Further emphasizing my point of view, older can be a mentor to the young starter and the young workers can be an efficient worker in future. In this way, the organization may not have to hire a trainer and spend money on training. However, if you think that older workers are not physically as strong as younger, then they still should be allocated to the lighter jobs and if older are not as smart as younger in terms of following latest technology, they should be provided training to command over the latest Information Technology innovation.

To conclude, I believe there should be a strict law and order on discrimination against older to protect the individual rights of the freedom. The government should focus on implementing policies on the workplace that can protect elder abuse and discrimination so that senior workers nave feels any torture either mentally or physically.

Answer 2:-

Older workers are generally just as capable as the young. Since age is not necessarily an indication of lower ability , treating a person less favorably on the basis of their age alone is just as unreasonable and unfair as doing so on the basis of his or her sex , race or religion . It would also be inconsistent with the principles of equal treatment and non-discrimination, which are at the heart of the notion of individual rights which most modern democracies espouse.

If a specific older worker truly has , say , less concentration or manual strength than a younger worker , and this objectively makes that candidate less qualified for the particular job , then employers could come to a determination regarding the employment decision in the case , based on relative lack of suitability for the job—rather than merely on age . Age by itself should never be a determinant.

There is nothing to indicate that older workers are not as productive and essential to the work place as younger workers . Indeed the contrary may be the case . The benefits of having a mixed-age work force which better reflects the wider society may bring a crucial competitive advantage to the employing organization . Older workers could take on a mentoring role for younger workers who may not have as wide a range of life skills and experiences as older workers . Conversely , older workers may be able to benefit from the technical skills of younger workers who are more aware of cutting edge technologies .

Ultimately any decision should be based on general principles concerning the rights of individuals to achieve their true potential , the needs of companies to meet the economic challenges ahead and the need for laws governing the rights of individuals to be consistent across all spheres of public life . Therefore , in my view , discrimination against older workers should definitely be made illegal

How to Greatly Improve Your English Pronunciation Native Like

1. Learn to listen.

Before you learn how to speak, you’ll need to learn how to listen. Some sounds can be hard to tell apart when you’re listening. Did the speaker sleep or slip? Did he hurt his chin or his shin? If you can hear the difference, it will be easier to speak the difference.

There are many guides to get you started in learning to listen. We have some great articles here about learning to listen from movies, songs and music and podcasts. You can also find listening exercises online, like this one from Rong-chang.

The pronunciation practice at Many Things is really slick, especially its huge selection of lessons on minimal pairs. Minimal pairs are pairs words like sleep and slip, that are only different by one sound. You can click on each word to hear a complete sentence with each, then quiz yourself in the second box and click the correct answer.

When you want to listen to authentic English instead of pronunciation exercises, you can watch videos on FluentU. FluentU is an online immersion platform that takes real-world videos—like music videos, movie trailers, news and inspiring talks—and turns them into personalized language learning lessons.

Every word comes with an in-context definition, image, audio and example sentences, so you have enough support to make native English accessible to you. FluentU’s “learn mode” takes your learning history into account, and asks questions based on what you already know, which sets you up for success.

The better you get at hearing words, the better you will become at pronouncing them.

2. Notice how your mouth and lips move.

When you speak, you move your mouth. How you move your mouth affects how you pronounce a word.

The first step to correcting your mouth shape is to notice it and pay attention. There are a few ways you can check that your mouth and lips are making the correct shape:

Use a mirror. This is by far the simplest way to tell what your mouth is doing while you talk.

Put a finger in front of your lips (like you’re saying “shh”). As you speak, don’t move your finger. You should feel your lips moving away from or pushing against your finger.

Watch other people and notice the shape their mouth and lips make when they talk. Try following along with your favorite TV show or movie. Can you repeat the faces and sounds that the actors are making?

There are guides and pictures online that will help you learn how to move your mouth. Sounds of English has some good explanations for pronouncing specific words. This guide is for people making 3D animations, but the pictures are a great start to understanding how your mouth should look when you speak.

3. Pay attention to your tongue.

The main difference between rice and lice is in your tongue. When you speak, you move your tongue to make sounds. You probably didn’t even notice that, since you do it without thinking. To improve your English pronunciation, it’s a good idea to check what your tongue is doing.

Some difficult sounds for non-native speakers to make are the letters “L” and “R,” and the sound “TH.” Pronouncing them correctly is all in the tongue!

To make the “L” sound, your tongue should touch the back of your front teeth and the top of your mouth, just behind your teeth. Try it now: Say the word “light.” Say it a few times. Feel where your tongue is in your mouth. Make sure it touches the top of your mouth.

To make the “R” sound, your tongue should not touch the top of your mouth. Pull your tongue back to the middle of your mouth, near where it naturally rests if you weren’t saying anything. As you say the sound, your lips should be a little rounded. Try it now: Say the word “right” a few times. You should feel air blowing between your tongue and the top of your mouth as you speak. You should also feel your lips get a little rounder when you make the sound.

Now for the “TH” sound. This one may seem strange if you don’t have a similar sound in your native language. To make this sound, put your tongue between your top and bottom teeth. Your tongue should stick out a little between your teeth, and as you push air out of your mouth, let some air escape between your tongue and teeth—that’s what makes the sound. Try it now: Say the word “think.” Repeat it a few times. Make sure you push your tongue between your teeth.

Now that you know where to put your tongue, can you hear the difference?

For a more detailed explanation on how to make those three sounds correctly, watch this video from the Woosong University, this one from Club English, or any number of other pronunciation guides you can find on YouTube.

If you can’t figure out what to do with your tongue to make the right sound, try asking someone. Ask them to say a word with that sound, then tell you where they put their tongue. They probably never thought about it before either!

4. Break words down into sounds.

Words are made up of syllables, or parts. The word “syllable,” for example, has three syllables: syl-la-ble. Turning words into parts can make them easier to pronounce.

To check how many syllables a word has, place your hand flat just under your chin. Say the word slowly. Each time your chin touches your hand, that’s a syllable.

You can even write the word down in parts. Leave a space or draw a line between each syllable (every syllable should have at least one vowel: a, e, i, o, u, y). Now try saying the word. Say it slowly and pause after each syllable. Isn’t that easier?

If you’re having trouble with syllables, you can check out How Many Syllables. This website shows you the syllables in any word you look up, and even shows you how to pronounce it.

5. Add stress to sounds and words.

English is a stressed language. That means some words and sounds are more important than others. You can hear this when you say a word out loud. For example, the word “introduce” is pronounced with a stress at the end, so it sounds like this: “in-tro-DUCE.”

Sometimes where you put the stress in a word can change the word’s meaning. Say this word out loud: “present.” If you said “PREsent,” you are talking about a noun that means either “right this moment” or “a gift.” If you said “preSENT,” you are talking about a verb that means “to give or show.”

There are rules for where the stress goes in each word. Here’s one rule:

Most two-syllable nouns are stressed on the first syllable, and most two-syllable verbs are stressed on the second syllable.

That’s just like the word “present.” Here’s another example: the noun “ADDress” is the place where you live, and the verb “addRESS” is to speak to someone.

If this all sounds too complicated, don’t worry about memorizing all these rules—the best way to learn is by listening and practicing. Remember that most native English speakers don’t know the rules either, they just say what “sounds right.” With enough practice, you can get what sounds right too.

Sentences have stresses too; some words are more important, and are said with more clarity and strength than the rest of the sentence. Try reading this sentence aloud: “I ate some toast with butter in the morning.”

The sentence should have sounded like this (the bold words are the stressed ones): “I ate some toast with butter in the morning.” Notice how you slow down every time you get to an important word, and quickly pass over the less important ones?

Keep practicing by reading out loud, having conversations and listening well to where others place stress when they speak.

6. Use pronunciation podcasts and videos.

There are some excellent video and audio guides on English pronunciations that you can use to improve. The English Language Club has videos that show how to make different sounds in English. Rachel’s English has friendly videos on how to speak and pronounce American English in everyday conversations.

If you like podcasts better, Pronuncian has over 200 audio files that help with everything from pronunciation to stress and pitch (how you raise and lower your voice while you speak).

If none of these are what you’re looking for, there are many more to choose from. Find the one that’s right for you.

7. Record yourself.

One way to tell if all your practice is working is to record yourself with a camera. Use a camera and not just a sound recorder because it’s important to see how you speak, not only hear it.

You don’t need to download any special software to record yourself; most computers and mobile devices have built-in video recorders. You can use PhotoBooth on a Mac or Movie Moments on a Windows computer. Your phone or mobile device also has a video capturing app, usually as part of the camera app.

Compare your recording to someone else saying the same words or sounds. Find a video of your favorite part from a movie, like this clip from “Earth to Echo.” Choose one or two sentences and record yourself trying to match the stress, tone and pronunciation of the video. Then you can compare the two and see what you did differently, and try again.

Ask a friend or watch a video to check. If your pronunciation doesn’t sound the same, ask yourself some questions: Are you moving your mouth the right way? Is your tongue in the right place? Are you stressing the right part of the word? Use everything you learned in this article!

8. Practice with a buddy.

As always, “Practice makes perfect!” And it’s easier to practice with a friend. Find someone to practice pronunciation with, either in person or through online communities like Language Exchange or InterPals.

Practicing with a buddy (friend) will give you a chance to try everything you learned, and learn new things from each other. Plus, it’s fun!

Pronunciation is as important to learning English as vocabulary and grammar. Thanks to these eight tips, you’ll soon be on your way to pronouncing English like a native.

There are no shortcuts to perfect pronunciation, however there are some ways you can practise more effectively and improve your skills faster. Follow our ten top tips, start improving your pronunciation today and take a step closer towards your goal of perfect English pronunciation.

Few more useful Steps :-

Listen to yourself
Slow down!
Picture it…
Get physical!
Watch yourself
Copy the experts
Practice English alone
Find a language buddy
Pay attention to intonation and stress
Sing a song!

Listen to yourself !

It’s often difficult to hear pronunciation errors in your own speech because you are concentrating actually communicating rather than the sound you are making. If you can’t hear your pronunciation problems, it’s tough to correct them. Try recording your speech with your smartphone or PC and making a note of specific areas you need to improve on

Slow down!

Many English learners think that speaking fluently means they need to speak fast. This is wrong. Speaking too fast reinforces bad habits and makes the speaker sound nervous and indecisive. Speaking slowly will give you time to breathe properly and think about what you want to say next. Because it gives you time to think while you are speaking, you’ll feel more relaxed and be able to concentrate on making your English sound fantastic.

Picture it !

Close your eyes and think about how to make a sound before saying it. Visualize the positioning of your mouth and face. If you have studied with the phonemic chart, think about the sound you are making and how it relates to other English phonemes. If you have used diagrams of the mouth and tongue, think about the shape you need to make inside your mouth if you want to make the sound correctly.

Get physical!

Pronunciation is a physical skill. You’re teaching your mouth a new way to move and using different muscles. Focus on difficult sounds each day. Having trouble with ‘th’? Put your tongue between your teeth (don’t bite down) and blow air out of your mouth. Feel the air move over the top of your tongue.

Watch yourself!

Stand in front of a mirror to see the placement of your tongue, lips, and shape of your mouth when you make certain sounds. Compare what you see with a video of a native-speaker saying the same thing.

Copy the experts!

There’s no replacement for learning pronunciation from the experts – native-speakers. So listen! Listen to English radio programs and watch television and movies in English. Imitate what you’re hearing – even if you’re not sure what they’re saying yet.

Practice English alone!

Pronunciation problems persist because we’re afraid to make mistakes. Create scenarios – meeting someone for the first time, ordering at a restaurant, asking for directions – then act out the dialogue by yourself. Don’t be shy.

Find a language buddy!

Getting feedback from an outside observer is crucial. Find a friend who’s also interested in improving their English. Try exchanging recorded messages so you can listen closely to each other’s pronunciation.

Pay attention to intonation and stress!

Good pronunciation is more than just mastering individual sounds. It’s also understanding intonation (the rise and fall of the voice) and stress (some sounds in words and some words in sentences are louder or clearer than others). Read poems, speeches and songs aloud, concentrating on the word stress and intonation.

Sing a song!

Learn the words to popular English songs and sing along. Singing helps you relax and just get those words out, as well as helping your rhythm and intonation. Because you don’t need to concentrate on constructing sentences for yourself, you can concentrate on making your pronunciation sound great!
